Social media continues to play an increasingly important role in both our working lives and personal lives. The past twelve months has seen many of the major players continue to grow and, whilst some have lost impetus, others have emerged from the chasing pack.
This blog post will take a closer look at the vital statistics and how they have altered over the past twelve months. We’ll start with the big boys, Facebook and Twitter.
Facebook
Facebook remains the poster boy of social media. Twelve months ago its numbers were impressive, now these are even more mind-blowing.
Back then Facebook had:
• 350 million global users
• 175 million users logging in every day
• 65 million users logging into Facebook via their mobile devices
• 3.5 billion pieces of content uploaded whether links, articles or videos
Now twelve months on Facebook has:
• 640 million active global users
• 250 million users logging in every day, a 40% increase year on year
• 200 million users logging in via their mobiles, a 200% increase on last year
• Doubled the amount of content added to the site each week, over 7 billion.
Twitter
Whilst Facebook is the runaway leader of the social sphere, Twitter continues to make great strides too.
Twelve months ago Twitter had:
• 75 million user accounts set up
• 27 million tweets on average each day
• 1.3 million tweets made every hour on average
Now, Twitter has:
• 175 million registered users
• 95 million tweets made, on average, each day, a 250% increase
• 4 million tweets made every hour on average
The past twelve months have been good for LinkedIn and Flickr, both of which are established social platforms, but their growth has accelerated in the past year.
LinkedIn
The social platform for business professionals has enjoyed steady growth in the past year, perhaps an indication of social media’s importance to the working world.
Back then, LinkedIn had:
• 50 million members worldwide
• 11 million users in Europe
Twelve months down the road and LinkedIn has:
• 100 million members on a global scale
• 20 million users based in Europe, indicating a fast growing market
Flickr
Flickr has seen a 25% increase in growth with over 5 billion images hosted on the site. Last year there was 4 billion.
