It has been two weeks since the announcement of the European E-privacy Directive and it appears we’re no nearer to understanding how this is going to be implemented and policed.
We have been patiently waiting to hear about further, concrete developments to see how this proposed directive will be rolled out. In that time we have seen the UK Government describe the 25 May deadline as unattainable and many industry commentators deride the decision.
So Where Does That Leave Us?
Essentially, as we were. This status quo could be something we may well see maintained as the logistics of this wholesale change to European sites struggles to take off.
That isn’t to say there hasn’t been some activity. Mozilla and Microsoft have added ‘do not track’ options to their latest Web browsers, with IE9 launched last week. We have also seen parodies of the proposed legislation, although whilst funny, do give an indication of the kind of thing we could see – in its most exaggerated and extreme form.
The main thing to do at this stage appears to be to sit tight and wait and see what developments occur before making major changes to your website.
