Is Facebook becoming one of the most powerful influences on modern society and how we conduct our interactions, share information and get answers? Time Magazine certainly thinks so after they made Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder of Facebook, their person of the year.
This is a major indication of the growing influence that the social network (excuse the pun) is having. Facebook’s rise in prominence knows no abounds with new features, layouts and even an email service launched this year.
The fact that a social network is now seen as the major competition to Google suggests just how much it has grown.
“Transforming the way we live our lives”
In announcing Mr. Zuckerberg as the person of the year, Time managing editor Richard Stengel described the social network as "transforming the way we live our lives every day".
An estimation of the popularity of Facebook is not necessarily in the 500 million plus users but the wave of success that the film adaptation has enjoyed this year. So successful has David Fincher’s adaptation of Zuckerberg and co’s rise from Harvard students to billionaires been that it is being mentioned in the same breath as the Oscars.
It is fair to say that 2010 has been the year of Facebook and perhaps fitting that its iconic co-founder should be acknowledged as a inspiring force in the modern world.
