It’s “going to be the technology of 2011” according to David Burke of Google's mobile division and we won’t have long to wait before we start seeing the effect of Near Field Communications (NFC).
His statement was made to the BBC ahead of the anticipated launch of the second Google phone, the Nexus S. This is the follow up to the lukewarm received Nexus One, launched less than 12 months ago.
An Exciting New Field of Communication
One of the defining features of the latest model, designed by Samsung, is the NFC hardware. The technology is a big hit in Japan and, with the launch of the Nexus S – expected at the end of the month – and other Nokia models; it won’t be long until we are seeing more of it in the UK.
The technology works as a mobile travel ticket, allowing you to make small payments and find information about products and adverts, simply by placing the phone over the correct area.
It will make the mobile phone a more powerful tool for advertisers who can link their offline and online campaigns closely. Mr. Burke continued by saying:
"When you put the phone on top, it energises the circuit. It can echo information back to the phone and the phone can send information to the chip. So, you can swipe a movie poster and watch the trailer automatically."
