Everywhere You Go Always Take Facebook With You

As the Crowded House song might sound if it was about Facebook. Well, you certainly can’t accuse Facebook of sitting still. Less than a month after it emerged that the social media giant is moving into location-based applications it pops up on the UK version.

From today (17 September 2010) some of you might have noticed little updates informing you of where your friends are and who they are with. This is because Facebook Places has now officially launched in the UK. So expect to start finding out where your friends are, not just what they are doing.

Highlight Places of Interest

The Facebook Places application requires you to check in so that it can identify where you are. The new application also finds businesses or areas of interest nearby to enhance the mobile/location-based experience.

The application also has a variety of privacy settings to limit the amount of information shared. For instance, if you check in and share your location, only your friends will be able to see this.

The new offering from Facebook, is tapping into the mobile market as more and more people access their Facebook accounts via their mobiles, with more and more smartphones arriving on the market. It is also an opportunity for advertisers to promote their businesses on a local level.
