Are Google Becoming Too Obsessed with Speed?

Earlier in the year, one of the worst kept secrets in search - that site speed was being used as a ranking factor in Google - was indeed confirmed by the search engine giant.

Well it appears that their penchant for speed isn’t abating. This week Google confirmed that they are always trying out new things and working on “50-200 search experiments” at any given time.

One such experiment is updating search results as you type. Yet, how far is this continuing their commitment to provide the most specific results or just impatiently pushing speed to its limits?

Too Jumpy and Messy

Initially it seems like a sound idea, reacting to what you type to provide a myriad of options, some of which might even grab your attention and entice you to click before you finish typing your keyword(s). Yet, how on earth do companies rank for this and compensate for subtle changes in the keyword? It seems like an exhaustive process and very long-winded.

Another potential draw-back is Google trying to second guess your keyword – this is taking the suggested keywords to a whole new level.

The appearance also looks rather messy and jumpy as you punch in each new letter. Whilst the experiment toys with the idea of refining search results quickly, rumour has it, it hasn’t been met with much positivity so far.
