After introducing Facebook Questions recently, Facebook has entered another area of search/social as it looks to expand its services.
Last week it emerged that Facebook has officially entered the courting stages of introducing location-based services. The new service will only be available in the US through Facebook’s iPhone app initially, however, they will be looking to roll this out to all 500 million plus members soon.
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg stated “this is meaningful because you can stay connected with your friends around you”.
“Real-world Thinking”
The new service works by encouraging people to use a ‘check-in’ button that provides a list of places near their location and they choose the closest one. One interesting feature of the service is that it allow users to tag friends who they may be worth.
The move is tapping into a market led by established names like Foursquare and Gowalla. Chris Cox, Facebook’s vice president of product is quoted on the BBC saying:
“This third place is the one we end up talking about a lot. I went to a movie, I saw a band, I went to a bar. So much of the interesting stuff in our lives happens in this small amount of time and we want to make that come alive.”
The move hopes to take Facebook out of the home and into “real-world kind of thinking.”
