Google’s Internet browser – Chrome – overtook Apple’s Safari for the first time in the USA last week, to put it third behind Internet Explorer and Firefox. IE remains the market-leader in the US with 52% of the market share.
The figures released by StatCounter relate to a week-by-week measurement and show that Chrome has 8.97% of the market share whilst Safari has 8.88%.
The Battle for Internet Browser and Mobile Superiority
Although globally Chrome has long been ahead of Safari with over a 5% difference in market share, this shift in the US strikes a significant blow in the on-going battles for superiority between Apple and Google.
They are both competing in the Internet browser market and also the mobile market where Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android operating system vie for control. Aodhan Cullen, CEO of StatCounter commented on the latest figures that could prove to be quite significant. He said:
“This is quite a coup for Google as they have gone from zero to almost 10% of the US market in under two years. There is a battle royal going on between Google and Apple in the internet browser space (Chrome v Safari) as well as in the mobile market (Android v iPhone).”
