So the dust has settled and the numbers are churning but what have we learnt from Google’s rather generous and surprising release of greater organic search information?
Well once the initial excitement subsided a sense of suspicion quickly replaced it as many search experts treated the information with the kind of apprehension of a previously scorned webmaster.
However, this apprehension isn’t without good reason as Google have a history of providing data that isn’t always as good as it perhaps first appears to be. And, once again, taking this information at face value could leave you red-faced.
“Very surprised that Google has made this data available”
First impressions suggest that the information doesn’t correlate with other tracking tools’ data, but this is hardly surprising given that different systems will show different data. It is, though, proving very useful for keyword targeting and herein lays its strength.
As a tool for finding information when compared and used with other data, it can be very useful, however, it really isn’t reliable enough to trust without any cross referencing.
Dom Barry, senior SEO manager for home james commented on the new information. He stated: “Very surprised that Google has made this data available. It’s useful, but like most tools, it should be used to identify trends rather than be relied upon for absolute data values.”
The result – this information is proving to be quite useful for identifying trends in its initial stages, especially when used in relation with other data. However, using it to rely on absolute data values won’t prove to be useful and could leave you looking a little red-faced.
