Twitter Promote Advertising for the First Time

We all know about tweeting and re-tweeting but now there are promoted tweets, however, you’ll need to have a bit of cash to send one of these. This is because they form the first wave of advertising on the micro-blogging site, Twitter.

Today (13th April 2010) Twitter announced that they would start showing promoted tweets which are essentially paid for adverts. However, in a move to keep things aesthetically similar, Twitter won’t be going down the route of Facebook and allowing small ads to appear on their pages. Instead we have the promoted tweet.

They Look Like Tweets, They Act Like Tweets but Just Cost Money

Looking just like any normal tweet, the paid for promoted tweets will be displayed – only one per page – at the top of relevant searches and can be retweeted or replied to as normal. In fact this will form a vital function of the promoted tweets because those that don’t get any traction in searches will disappear.

So what is in it for the advertiser? Well prime location on results, so long as the tweet is good enough to engage with people, and it will reach a much larger audience on the network.

And for the users – they could potentially benefit from more direct sales, promotions and offers tweets.

Because these are the first tentative steps into the lucrative world of advertising for Twitter there is expected to be some trial and error as they establish the usefulness and relevance of promoted tweets.
