Facebook Overtakes Google!

The week ending 13 March 2010 marked a historic day in the short life of Facebook and also hinted at a potential shift in power between the leading search engine and leading social media platform. Yet it seemingly crept under the radar.

According to Hitwise, Facebook finished the week with 7.07% of all US site visits, ahead of Google’s 7.03% share. The findings also highlighted Facebook’s major growth in the past twelve months, after they recorded a little over 2% of US site visits in the same time in 2009. They have also recently celebrated reaching the 400million members landmark.

But it is the fact that for the first time, Google have been usurped at the top of the ratings.

A Greater Importance on Social Networks

This also comes after Google launched their very own social media platform – Buzz, which some believe is inspired by the success that Facebook is garnering.

These ratings allude to the greater importance that specialists are placing on social networks as their popularity soars. It also intensifies the need to cultivate a social presence in the current climate.

This is a key victory for Facebook as their competition with Google intensifies. So it seems surprising that it crept under the radar so easily. However, the next few weeks of results are sure to be scrutinised closely by a number of industry commentators and experts to see which way the influence swings.
