Bing Increase Search Market Share Again

For the third successive month Bing has slowly increased their market share, which should please Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. During the recent SMX West Conference Mr. Ballmer alluded to small increases and percentage gains as the direction he wants Bing to go in. These latest figures from Hitwise show that progress is being made.Search Market Share

Bing’s market share in the field of search in America grew to 9.70%, a 4% improvement month-over-month. Moreover, combined with Yahoo!, with whom they have recently announced their partnership, they now enjoy 24.27% of the market share.

Google continue to dominate the market with 70.95% of all US-based searches, however, this percentage is down 1% against the previous month.

The results also showed Bing growing in strength in the key domains of search; automotive, health, shopping and travel.

Although these are US-based results it is often thought they have a knock-on effect in the search habits in the UK. It is interesting to see Bing’s popularity growing steadily each month and the results of the next Hitwise study should give an indication of whether or not the partnership between Bing and Yahoo! will have a greater bearing on market share.

I think this is just the tip of the iceberg with the merger coming up soon!
