More businesses may be turning to Twitter for social media marketing purposes, with new research revealing the number of unique visitors to the micro-blogging site has increased.
Data from comScore shows the number of unique visitors to Twitter increased from 21.25 million in December to a record high of 21.79 million in January.
It is suggested the increase may be a result of Google's announcement last December that it is integrating Twitter updates into its search results, which may have been an influence.
Commenting on the results, Tim Gibbon, founder of Social Media Portal, said micro-blogging is just one example of technology working favourably for brands if it is managed correctly.
"Social media and particularly micro-blogging has mainstream media hooked [...] Twitter is a great example how both users and brands can push updates amongst and to each other at lightning speed, but it does come with its challenges, more notably from saturation," he added.
Mr Gibbon explained that while for some businesses tweets which are simple updates may be enough to drive traffic up, for others more dialogue and conversation may be needed to see the appeal of brands heightened.
