Giveaway through SEO could guarantee success

Businesses may wish to consider offering a giveaway in order to attract customers and build links through search engine optimisation (SEO) following the comments of one sector commentator.

Rob Ousbey, writing for the SEOmoz blog, says when executed correctly, a free giveaway is one of the "very few tactics" which could guarantee success on link-building.

"Running giveaways online typically offers a few different opportunities; of most immediate use to SEOs is that competitions can attract links from authoritative sites and a variety of domains," he explains.

Mr Ousbey adds such an offer can also allow effective data collection and the email addresses and details gathered could be used to contact potential customers in the future.

He advises social media marketing can be used to promote a competition, such as by Tweeting the details and including a link to the website.

However, he notes businesses may have to run a few giveaways in order to make them a success for link-building, although this does not have to mean spending a lot.

A recent study by iProspect, cited on the e-Consultancy blog, suggested boosting SEO by combining online with offline marketing, which has been revealed to influence 40 per cent of searchers' buying decisions.
