As social media marketing increases in popularity in terms of promotion, it has also been predicted such networking platforms are set to take over from internal email.
Indeed, by 2014, social networks will have replaced internal email for communication purposes in 20 per cent of business organisations, according to research from Gartner.
Furthermore, over the next few years it is predicted the majority of companies will construct their own internal social networks, while by 2012 over 50 per cent of enterprises will use activity streams that include microblogging.
Commenting on the news, Will McInnes, managing director of digital media agency Nixon McInnes, said many firms are now beginning to "play around" with social media when it comes to their enterprises.
"I think the external environment has changed so much that people are thinking that if staff don't read their newsletter, but do like reading Facebook, then perhaps there's a better way to communicate," he stated.
Facebook recently celebrated its fifth birthday and announced it has 400 million users.
