Google Social Search has left Google Labs and is being rolled out on the company's various sites, the search engine group has announced.
This means when users now perform a search it will include updates from their social network contents, which may prompt businesses to consider social media marketing.
Commenting on the news, Tim Gibbon, co-founder and editor at the Social Media Portal, said the development will "certainly be of interest" to search marketers and search engine optimisation specialists in particular.
"Brands and agencies alike have been fixated with maximising the use of content to improve search ranking and more recently through Google's Universal Search, where images and video are displayed within search results," he added.
Mr Gibbon added that while there are a great number of social networks and microblogging sites online, over the years the field has balanced out, with leaders emerging.
Due to the personal natures of such sites and the fact that, in the most part, they are free to use, he claimed fragmentation would continue.
