Businesses which fail to increase their online presence through campaigns such as search engine optimisation (SEO) and pay per click could be at risk of falling behind their competitors, it has been suggested.
Meghan Keane, writing for the e-consultancy blog, says retailers which do not keep up in the digital market will lose out in their overall sales goals.
Commenting on a new survey by research firms IHL Group and Retail Info Systems, which found more businesses were concentrating on improving cross-channel capabilities, she adds traditional retailers are working hard to compete with online companies in terms of customer satisfaction and price.
"While digital pure plays have the benefit of less overhead and often lower prices, brick and mortar retailers have strengths that have kept them in business this long," Ms Keane explains.
She concludes such firms need to become adept in their digital presence if they wish to excel over the years to come.
Vicky Redwood, UK economist for Capital Economics, recently claimed many businesses were looking to increase their online presence in both an attempt to keep costs down and stay ahead of the competition.
