Due to security concerns, both the German and French governments have issued statements warning their citizens against the Microsoft web browser Internet Explorer, in news which could have connotations for businesses which use it for search engine optimisation purposes.
The warnings came due to Explorer's role in the recent Google hack which was believed to have been carried out to gain access to the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists.
Germany's Federal Office for Information Security stated vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer allowed hackers to gain access to servers owned by Adobe, Google, Rackspace and over 20 other companies.
However, Microsoft is reported to believe the warning is too severe.
Commenting on the news, Shane Wright, technical director of eDigitalResearch, said that while Explorer used to be seen as one of the least secure browsers, as other browsers have gained popularity they are likely to have the same vulnerabilities.
"As a general rule, the most secure browser will be the most up to date one - regularly patched with vendor updates - and where unnecessary extensions or plug-ins have been disabled," he advised.
