Google recently fell victim to a "highly sophisticated" cyber attack, it has reported, in news which may interest businesses which use the search engine for pay per click advertising purposes.
In an official blog post from the group, it revealed it removed the threat from its corporate infrastructure and that the primary goal of the hackers appeared to be to gain access to Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists.
It added that some 20 other large companies from a wide range of businesses had been similarly targeted.
As a result of the incident, Google has stated it is now considering its position on China.
Commenting on the news, Amichai Shulman, chief technology officer of Imperva, said many firms are attempting to develop security solutions to such wide-scale phishing attacks.
He added there are take-down services available for firms which have been targeted, along with security policies which can delete phishing attacks.
However, Mr Shulman warned there was no real reason for phishing attacks to become more sophisticated, as "people are still falling for the simplest tricks in the book".
