Google Street View to allow advertising?

Businesses planning a local search engine optimisation campaign may be interested to learn the grant of a recent patent to Google's Street View tool which could have significant implications for online advertising.

Several reports have suggested the patent would appear to allow the delivery of targeted advertising through all of Google's mapping resources, including Street View.

This could mean local businesses are able to market their services through the tools.

Commenting on the news, Rhys Williams, a managing partner at agenda21 digital, said the digital advertising opportunities which could arise from this would be similar to those seen in computer games.

While he did not see this as having the impact that larger advertisers required, be believed it was targeting the small and medium-sized business market.

"It's also a great opportunity for local advertisers that have traditionally relied on local press and radio to target people within the Street View environment," Mr Williams added.

The patent is entitled Video Overlay Advertisement Creator.
