Businesses using Twitter updates as part of a social media marketing strategy may be interested to earn one sector commentator has suggested it is too late for the site itself to make money.
Jason Falls, a social media consultant and blogger on socialmediaexplorer.com, said the micro-blogging site has waited too long to build a profitable business model, but there were ways it could boost its revenue.
These included having an app store where developers have to pay for access, but so far Twitter has allowed apps to develop without money needing to change hands.
"The challenge will be finding a way to drive revenue without contradicting the free and open user community that's already created," Mr Falls explained.
His comments come after Twitter announced it is now recruiting more staff to focus on monetising its micro-blogging service.
Google announced late last year it has begun including real-time updates from sites such as Twitter in its search results, which could provide a further boost to social media marketing campaigns.
