Will consumers pay for online content?

While businesses in the past may have been left stumped at how they can make money out of their websites once their search engine optimisation or pay per click brings users to it, they may now be considering charging for content.

Indeed, whether people opt to pay for their online content could be a big issue over the next few years and one recent study has revealed that in many cases, consumers are willing to fork out for content.

However, it was found that some online material, people believed should be free.

The Nielsen report revealed 57 per cent of respondents admitted they would be willing to pay for music, while the same percentage said they would or have paid for films and 51 per cent would get out their wallets to buy a game.

One the other end of the spectrum, only 28 per cent felt they should pay to join a social community, 26 per cent would consider paying to listen to a talk or news radio show and just 20 per cent claimed they would pay to read a blog.

Ben Camm-Jones, news editor at Web User, recently warned newspapers are unlikely to prove successful at charging for their content, as customers will just go to the competition.
