If 2010 is the year that mobile presence emerges with just as much clout as SEO and SMO then the expected launch of the Nexus One, the first Google-branded phone, on January 5 will ensure that the year starts with a bang.
Accessing online content on a mobile device has enjoyed increased popularity and, with an optimistic up-ward curve predicted for 2010, the need for companies to embrace this online tool grows.
As we spoke about at the end of last year there is a growing need to develop an online presence as smartphones get smarter.
Are the Rumours True?
The Google-branded Nexus One is expected to be launched at a press conference on January 5 2010 amidst a storm of speculation. The blogosphere and Google’s real-time updates have been wildly spinning through new comments and entries, all largely (and excitedly) promising that this latest innovation is now ready to be unveiled to the world.
It is fair to say that everything is in place for them to launch the product. The predicted launch is conveniently two days prior to the celebrated Consumer Electronics Show where the crème de la crème of the electronics world converge to showcase all the latest innovations.
However, the biggest give-away comes courtesy of an internal T-Mobile announcement which was leaked that read, “Google, with support from T-Mobile is scheduled to launch an Android device in early January.” A bit of a giveaway?
Yet what does the Nexus mean for the market?
“It looks like Google is moving to see if they can do the Apple thing”
Well it will mark a significant change of direction by Google who have been happy to simply allow mobile phone providers to use their Android operating system. As Rob Enderle, an analyst of Silicon Valley-based Enderle Group told the BBC, "it looks like Google is moving to see if they can do the Apple thing."
It has received mixed reviews from sources that have managed to get their hands on a copy of the model but with details not yet clear it is premature to take any critiques too seriously.
The main thing that this highlights is the importance that many companies are now placing in mobile applications as more people use their phones on the move to access information.
Smartphones are continuing to pioneer new content platforms that are attracting a growing audience to mobile sites so these cannot be ignored.
