Website statistics compiled by Harris Poll show a rise in internet usage by the average user since the beginning of the recession.
According to the online and telephone-based research agency, the average internet user now spends 13 hours online each week.
This compares with the period from 1999 to 2002, when website statistics compiled each year showed typical usage stood at seven hours per week.
Now, people aged between 30 and 39 are the heaviest users, at an average of 18 hours each week, five more than the typical 13 hours seen in the research.
However, it was not until 2007 that usage rose rapidly, from eight to nine hours in 2003-06 to 11 hours in 2007.
The research group suggests that the economic turbulence of 2008 brought a further rise, with the average peaking at the end of that year at 14 weekly hours spent online.
Harris Poll is among the longest-running weekly surveys, having been first conducted in 1963.
