When selecting an in-house member of the team or a third party provider to carry out search engine optimisation (SEO) services, there are a number of points businesses should keep in mind, it has been claimed.
Writing in a post for Search Engine Watch, Mark Jackson notes cost should not be the only deciding factor and that it is also important that the scope of SEO work needed is taken into consideration.
This includes identifying the competitive landscape, deciding if a blog or social media marketing is needed, will new content be required and who will create this.
"Transparency in SEO is important. If an unethical individual does something to your site that's against search engine guidelines, you're still the one responsible for your site's content and it will be your site that's penalised, Mr Jackson warns.
He advises businesses to check out references and rankings for themselves when choosing an SEO provider and treat it as though they are looking to hire a new employee.
David Hollands-Hurst, an SEO consultant for Pixl8 Interactive, recently stated local search is important in SEO campaigns and companies should ensure they advertise to consumers in their area.
