New social networking site Blippy - set to be launched in the new year - is unlikely to form an integral part of businesses' social media marketing agenda if the suggestions of one sector commentator are to be believed.
Created by web entrepreneur Philip Kaplan, Blippy is in beta, which means that it can currently only be accessed by invitation.
The site is set to allow members to share information on credit card purchases with fellow users in order to locate people.
However, commenting on the news, Tim Houghton, director of New Media Intelligence, said he was unsure if it would take off as it would need to first build user acceptance.
He explained that typically this was done before looking at ways to make money from the critical mass of members.
"That's the normal way round. It almost sounds as if they are trying to make money first but forgotten to build the user base," Mr Houghton asserted.
He added that it would "surely" be a target for fraudsters due to the credit card information the site contains.
