Social media has "forever changed" the way people live, one sector commentator has advised - which may mean businesses can no longer afford to ignore social media marketing.
Erik Qualman, in a post for Search Engine Watch, says it is simpler when people have multiple social networking accounts to be themselves, rather than using certain sites to put across a slightly different persona, as this can become confusing.
He adds that the same is true when corporations are using such accounts for social media marketing purposes as trying to be too many things to all people can be costly.
Mr Qualman notes it is "crucial" for businesses to play to their strengths by passing on knowledge to consumers from their niche and improving production and marketing success by staying in contact with customers.
"It's one thing for marketing to listen to consumers' complaints, but it's an entirely different thing to respond to their complaints, look for trends in product deficiencies and work closely with production to develop solutions," he claims.
The writer concludes that to stay relevant, businesses need to remember the fun and common sense aspects of social media marketing and stay true to their brand and realise they are visible.
Jason Falls, a social media consultant and blogger on socialmediaexplorer.com, recently advised that acting like "human beings" could close the gap between a brand and its customers.
