Typically it is the website which is best optimised for links - such as those where marketers have employed search engine optimisation techniques - which are likely to perform better than the competition for rankings, one sector commentator has claimed.
SEOmoz's Randfish made his assertion during a blog detailing a debate he had with blogger Chris Dixon, after the latter claimed that the better a website's content, the more links it will earn.
However, Randfish noted that optimisation will typically outweigh quality website content.
"This may seem like a tragedy, or even a travesty of the democratic structure the web is supposed to represent, but in fact, it's the way all marketing has worked for generations," he explained.
The writer likened this to family-owned restaurants which may produce better food than a chain-owned eatery but is not as well-known and so may not make as much money.
In his blog post, Mr Dixon pointed out that SEO was also "extremely important" in directing the majority of users to a website.
