What Google-Twitter integration means for SEO

Google's recent integration of real-time updates on social networks such as Twitter as part of its search rankings could mean changes for search engine optimisation (SEO), one sector commentator has claimed.

The search engine made its announcement this week and Sam Tilston, online marketing director at Zoombits.co.uk, said companies using SEO as part of a marketing campaign will now have to up their game.

This is because searchers will have access to up-to-the-minute and in many cases accurate information when performing a search, he added.

"There is a crossover, SEO focuses on keywords and these must be included within Twitter posts, accounts and descriptions if the Twitter feed is to be properly optimised for Google," Mr Tilston explained.

As the pace of gathering news and content creation is constantly accelerating, he noted it is now more important for Google to deliver live results.

The SEO expert advised firms to sign up with social networking properties if they wish to protect their brand and identities.

According to a blog post on Google this week, when users search they will see live updates from people on sites like Twitter and FriendFeed, as well as headlines from news and blog posts published seconds before they began searching.
