A leaked government Information and Communications Technology (ICT) report recently revealed plans to modernise the public sector ICT infrastructure and use more social media.
Leaked by the Conservative Party, the paper details proposals to save money through using social media and the possibility of an "apps" store for civil servants.
Currently there are more than 10,000 individual applications used by public sector organisations.
Commenting on the news, Shailey Minocha, senior lecturer of human-computer interaction at the Open University, said that when it comes to adopting a social media strategy it was important to demonstrate such technology would get results.
"Many companies have [such tools] now. Marks & Spencer has developed a social media strategy - a presence on Facebook, a presence on Twitter and, of course, a website. They also keep scanning whoever is talking about them," she added.
The news came shortly before Facebook announced it now has more than 350 million users around the world and plans to reorientate its network structure.
