Google analytics research has revealed the most popular searches currently being carried out in the UK, which may inspire businesses to embark on a social media marketing campaign.
Indeed, the top search of 2009 was a social networking site - Facebook - followed by BBC, YouTube, Hotmail, 'games', eBay, 'news', Google, Yahoo! and Bebo.
Meanwhile, while the greatest topic of interest appearing in Google searches was 'stephen gately', the fastest rising search queries included such varied results as 'swine flu', 'google maps' and 'robert pattinson'.
Commenting on the analytics research, Sam Tilston, online marketing director at Zoombits.co.uk, said sites could take advantage of these trends through search engine optimisation by including news on their site which is relevant to their brand, products, services or customers.
This would help to keep the site up to date and deliver traffic, he noted.
"Heavy hierarchical sites are on the way out simply because they are not user friendly; there is a general rule of thumb that whatever the user is looking for, be it information, product or service, must be within two clicks of the homepage," Mr Tilston concluded.
