Email could be dead within the next ten years as a result of the rise in popularity of social media marketing, it has been claimed.
According to a new study by TalkTalk and the University of Kent, over the next decade, the dominant communication tool will emerge as social networks and a combination of instant messaging systems.
Indeed, only 51 per cent of what the study calls First lifers - Britons in the late teens and early twenties who are technology-savvy and do not enjoy working at a desk - now use email as a regular form of communication.
Based on this trend, the researchers predicted that email is on its "last legs".
Commenting on the study, Mickael Remond, chief executive officer of communications company ProcessOne, said: "Email will continue to be an important business tool for many organisations, as it enables them to reach a number of people across a number of locations in a targeted and methodical way. However [...] it is becoming less of an effective medium for immediate communication."
