Is link building consistently changing?

One sector commentator has detailed how the process of link building has changed over the years he has been working on search engine optimisation.
Randfish, in a post for SEOmoz, explains that when he first started out, link building was a matter of looking through search engines for anything that was competition and led to directories or link lists before buying this advertising but he became increasingly focussed on white hat links.
As the process continually evolved, he notes that today it is changing again, and that search engines such as Bong and Google appear to have developed in order to cope with the "breakneck speed" of the internet and new forms of data.
His observations of where he expects link building to go next includes the way social media site Twitter appears to be "cannibalising the web's link graph", while the speed of link acquisition may be having an increasingly dramatic impact as well.
Furthermore, he states that brand and link associations are also influencing rankings more.
"It's hard to see the forest for the trees right now, but I think we're closing in on a time when real-time, social and traditional web references are all a part of the rankings equation. The future may be less about links and more about brand building and brand participation," Randfish states.
SEO Book's Peter D recently suggested that achieving the highest ranking position is only half the battle won.
