Embarking on a social media marketing campaign by beginning a blog, a social networking fan page or a Twitter account can help to boost search engine optimisation, it has been claimed.
But Search Engine Watch's Liana Evans warns that if the content of such pages is not seen as valuable then visitors will stop coming back and that additional search engine ranking will be lost.
"Even if you manage to attain some higher rankings by implementing some of these online marketing tactics, it ultimately will do you no good if the person clicking on the link sees your content as totally irrelevant and not valuable," she explains.
Ms Evans states that it is the audience which decides the value of content, rather than its creator.
Furthermore, "bells and whistles" can detract from content, she notes, while non-text content, such as a video explaining how a product works could prove invaluable.
Sage Lewis, in a post for Search Engine Watch, recently claimed that when businesses post links on third-party blogs they ensure that they are useful and relevant or they may not boost traffic to their website as they hoped.
