There are many organisations in the UK which are taking steps towards or considering banning the use of social networks in the workplace, but could this be counterproductive in terms of social media marketing.
In a post for Search Engine Watch, Erik Qualman compares the trend to the Kevin Bacon movie Footloose - in which rock music and dancing is banned in one town - and suggests people will one day look back on banning social media as "rather silly".
To support his claims, Mr Qualman notes that a few years ago many employees were banned from checking their personal email, while before that some workplaces did not allow people to access the internet.
He asks: "How can companies learn what to do in social media if they aren't allowing their employees to even use the tools?"
Businesses planning a social media marketing campaign may wish to pay heed to the recommendations of SEO Book's Peter D, who stated that it does not differ greatly from other types of advertising in that it should be accountable and ultimately demonstrate value.
