Google is one of many search engines but it continues to prove the most popular, as businesses with successful search engine optimisation campaigns may be aware.
However, could it soon be set to become the only search portal from which all web traffic leaves?
Will Cooper, deputy news editor of the magazine New Media Age, said that while this is a question that has long been asked, he does not believe that Google will become the main place from which searchers begin their online time.
"Google provides you with the platform that you can use to search for what you want," he added.
He was commenting after the search engine announced the launch of Google Social Search on its blog - a feature which allows users to search social media networks.
The service will allow signed-in Google account users to receive search-engine results that are based on their friends' activities across a variety of social media platforms, such as Twitter.
Mr Cooper noted that this demonstrated an understanding that people are looking for information on social networks, in addition to other websites.
