SEO the place to start

When embarking on a new website development project, businesses have been advised by one sector commentator to start by considering the role search engine optimisation (SEO) will play.

In a post for Search Engine Watch, Eric Enge said that focussing on the wrong aspects of the project will lead to less than optimised results and that SEO should be considered before the first line of code is written.

Indeed, before any decisions are made on the choice of web development technology, he advised that the site should be reviewed in terms of SEO as some technology will cause search engines to not crawl the site.

Carrying out keyword research ahead of coding is also "critical", he noted, as this will allow developers to determine the pattern of behaviour of customers, which will have an impact on navigation and site architecture.

Furthermore, Mr Enge stated that a site will need a lot of content and that inbound links are also required to drive rankings.

"Getting your SEO started at the beginning of a website project is essential to success. It's better and cheaper to take the time to do it right, than to take the time to do it over," he explained.

SEO Book's Peter D also advised that SEO should be seen from the perspective of the average user when it is being created.
