When looking for a specific product or service, many people may be keener to gather recommendations from contacts on social media sites than search through the pages of a search engine, it has been claimed.
In an article for ZDnet, wecando.biz states that when searching Google for a PR company in Huddersfield, the search engine generates 146,000 responses, despite the fact there are only 11 such firms in the town.
Furthermore, with only four of the 11 PR companies listed in the rankings, this means that Google has come back with less than 40 per cent accuracy, he states.
In light of this, people may be keener to head to Twitter for recommendations on the products and services they need.
"Google knows this is happening and is panicking enough to rush Real Time search results into the mix - you can now filter Google results by those posted in the past hour, for example," the writer notes.
Due to this, companies may find that social media marketing is just as beneficial as search engine optimisation.
Search Engine Watch's Eric Enge recently stated that keeping an eye on what is being said about a company in social media forums could also help with reputation management.
