Search engine optimisation (SEO) can help direct search engines towards "greatness" and should not be seen as a universal scam, one sector commentator has claimed, following an article which suggested the contrary.
Derek Powazek, in a recent blog post for Powazek.com, claimed that SEO is "not a legitimate form of marketing" and that people with souls or a brain should not undertake it.
However, SEO Book's Peter D said in response that SEO is responsible for making sure that search engines do not miss out on good content.
He added that while some web designers know a little about SEO, this can be rare, meaning that it can still be worthwhile hiring a specific SEO consultant to carry out the bulk of such work, such as identifying traffic streams, creating content and building links.
Mr P concludes that the definition of SEO put forward by Mr Powazek is narrow and can lead to false assumptions.
SEO Book's Ari Ozick recently claimed it is important SEO campaigns do not simply follow a crowd but that they are based on thorough research.
