When planning a social media marketing campaign businesses will need to consider if this will include a blog, Facebook group or Twitter, one sector commentator claims firms should also decide by who and how the scheme will be managed.
In a post for Search Engine Watch, Liana Evans notes that this is because building a relationship with consumers is one of the key goals of social media marketing, with company employees forming contacts with visitors.
"They're creating and strengthening the bond between your company and the users of your products or services," she adds.
Ms Evans explains that it is important the staff involved in such a campaign determine if the relationship is between the business and the consumer or themselves and the customer.
She notes that this is an important consideration as should a member of staff build up a good relationship with the person generating the social media content then when they leave the firm, consumers may follow.
Search Engine Watch's Erik Qualman recently claimed that another decision businesses need to make when embarking on a social media marketing campaign is which medium will work best for their purposes.
