While Google continues to be the most popular of the search engines, one sector commentator has asked whether it may have actually created a monopoly, without meaning to.
In a blog post for Search Engine Watch, Joshua Palau states that even mentioning Google in the same sentence as the term 'monopoly' would be considered taboo and that he does not believe the search engine leader is "evil".
He goes on to add that it is not Google's fault that it is the leader in terms of search as Yahoo! and Microsoft have so far been unable to take its place.
But he notes: "Google has become an accidental monopoly. Technically it doesn't have a monopoly, but it has enough market share that it can throw out changes which help its business while impacting yours."
Such a comment may prove useful to those organisations embarking on a search engine optimisation campaign.
Mr Palau's comments come after Search Engine Land's Danny Sullivan's questioned why Google did not rank itself higher in results pages for the term 'search engine', to which Google co-founder Sergey Brin replied that people using Google to search for such sites would not need to be led back to it.
