How long until search understands?

As increasing numbers of people have got themselves internet access and with more users spending regular portions of time online, the use of search has grown significantly.

However, as businesses running search engine optimisation (SEO) campaigns will be aware, individuals currently have to look through pages and pages of search results before they find what they are after.

But how long until search engines understand a query so thoroughly they can return a direct answer to the user?

Peter D, in a post for SEO Book, asks this question and states that if search engines such as Google are one day able to provide direct answers to questions, people may no longer be inclined to follow the links it provides in order to draw their own conclusions.

He asks: Conversely, why would anyone let Google crawl their content if Google's aim is to disintermediate the producer from their content?"

Such a future will not bode well for content producers, Mr D adds.

However, he states that the future is not all bleak, as someone will still need to generate the content which forms answers to search queries.

Neil Stapley, founder of Dadooda.com - a content networking site - recently stated that social media marketing may also need to change in the future, as the only way such sites may be able to generate money is by selling data.
