Google has continued to lead the way in search engine popularity, ahead of its competitors such as Bing and Yahoo!, but its true competition may come from social networks, including Twitter, Wikipedia and Facebook, one sector commentator has claimed.
Erik Qualman, in a post for Search Engine watch, suggested that in the future products and services will find their users via social media marketing, rather than consumers turning to search.
And many social networks may follow the lead of Google, which he claimed had made billions thanks to its search success.
"As these new social media players look for potential revenue streams, monetizing search will certainly bubble to the forefront for the executives," Mr Qualman added.
In light of this, he noted that while Google has not seen a real threat to its position to date, social media is likely to take the advantage in the future, which may lead Google to "get more social".
Neil Stapley, founder of Dadooda.com - a content networking site - recently claimed that social media platforms may need to sell data in order to generate cashflow.
