Internet advertising - such as pay per click campaigns (PPC) - is expected to increase next year, to account for some 15 per cent of global measured advertising spending in 2010, it has been predicted.
A new GroupM study noted that this was up from the 13 per cent that was expected to be reached in 2009.
It is believed this increase will be fuelled by advertising spending growth in areas of search - such as search engine optimisation and PPC - and mobile advertising, while advertising within traditional forms of media will continue to decline.
Furthermore, the study claimed that internet ad spending has outperformed all other media throughout the recession of the past year and into the current recovery.
Commenting on the news, Simon Mansell, managing director of digital marketing group TBG, said: "Online advertising is traditionally used for direct response which doesn't generally diminish during a recession as people still need to bring in customers, so it is likely to hold up better."
