Just like old-fashioned school lessons, one sector commentator has claimed that in order to succeed in search engine optimisation (SEO) businesses need to follow the Rs - this time, four of them.
In a blog for SEOmoz, Dr Pete explains that the four Rs are robots, ranking, relevance and results.
"The vast majority of SEO problems come down to narrowly focusing on one area [...] I'd say that 80 per cent of bad SEO boils down to missing the big picture," he notes.
By considering all of the four Rs, organisations are less likely to lose track of this big picture, he adds.
The first is robots, as Dr Pete notes that if a site is never discovered and indexed by the search engine, then it is unlikely to perform well in terms of SEO, with relevant inbound links and the creation of a crawlable, spider-friendly architecture both recommended.
He calls ranking the "Holy Grail of SEO", while relevancy is frequently more important than ranking for the most popular keywords.
Finally, he mentions results, as he mentions traffic is only valuable if it drives measurable results.
And the most valuable linking building tool was recently suggested by SEOmoz's Rob Ousbey as being creating links that competitors will never be able to have.
