Yandex from an SEO perspective

In terms of search engine optimisation (SEO), Russian search engine Yandex has revealed the importance of language and effective translation.

Such was the assertion of a recent Search Engine Watch blog, where Andy Atkins-Kruger stated that this was one of the main factors driving the search engine's success, after ComScore figures revealed it was the fastest growing search service in the top ten.

Following on from this, Search Engine Watch's Michael Bonfils has turned his attention to the best practices for SEO on Yandex.

He explains that the site may penalise websites which use pop-up banners or body click roll-overs and redirects, as this was how it determines spam.

And he notes that the Thematic Citation Index (TIC) is the equivalent of Google's PageRank.

"The TIC defines the 'authority' of internet resources, taking into account the qualitative characteristics of the source site," Mr Bonfils states, adding that the number of outbound relevant links to resources affects the value of its TIC.

He concluded that Yandex has many similarities to Google, in particular its algorithmic analysis and ranking.

Therefore, in addition to concentrating on link relevancy, businesses planning to optimise for Yandex could find following Google best practices useful.
