Yandex, a Russian search engine, is rapidly becoming the fastest growing service in its sector, new figures have revealed, leaving one commentator to speculate on why this is.
Recent figures released by comScore revealed that Yandex had demonstrated a 94 per cent growth rate placing it at ten in the top ten search engines.
This was in comparison to a Google growth rate of 58 per cent, Yahoo! at two per cent and Microsoft at 41 per cent.
Andy Atkins-Kruger, in a post for Search Engine Watch, explains that the success of Yandex may come down to its search engine technology, based on claims that it is similar to Google, despite being launched before the current search leader.
"The focus on the Russian language is one key reason why Yandex is a fascinating case study in understanding how linguistics lead to success in multilingual search engine optimisation," he says.
In addition, Mr Atkins-Kruger states that Yandex has a similar pay per click advertising structure to Google, is financially sound and has a positive connection with Russian language and culture, which all points to its success.
ComScore figures also recently revealed that the use of search engines around the world showed a significant increase of 41 per cent between July 2008 and 2009.
