Social micro-blogging site Twitter appears to be placing an increased focus on search, one commentator has suggested, in news which may interest firms looking to implement a social media marketing campaign.
In a blog post for Search Engine Land, Greg Sterling notes that the social network has re-designed its homepage to make it more akin to a search engine.
Furthermore, the group has hired Doug Cook as its "search guru", who was formerly an employee of Yahoo! and inktomi and who also created the wine-specific search engine Able Grape.
"Twitter is now effectively competing in search with not only the major players but all the third parties that are using the site's [application programme interface] as the backbone of their own engines," Mr Sterling claims.
Such news may be of interest to companies launching a social media marketing campaign, after they were recently advised by Search Engine Watch's Liana Evans to understand the community they wished to target in order to add value to it.
