Businesses that use social networks, communities and forums only to deliver the message of their marketing campaign may find that they are not met with much enthusiasm from their target audience.
Such is the opinion of Liana Evans, who in a post for Search Engine watch advises that firms always go into social media marketing bearing gifts.
"It's imperative that you understand the community you're dealing with so that when you come uninvited into the community, you come well prepared to add value to it," she explains.
Ms Evans recommends that such a gift does not have to be a physical item, but that on occasion the content and information a company can offer may be more valuable than the product they are selling.
Furthermore, she notes that free coupons are not always the best offer and that a community-specific gift or time limited promotion may be more effective at attracting customers.
And in further social media marketing advice, the site's Ron Jones states that a key benefit of such a campaign is the fact it allows businesses to build a relationship with their customers.
