Thanks to the increase in the number of people with access to the internet and the rise in popularity of blogging, social networks and forums, the general public now has the power to shape the opinions of other users.
This is a key principle businesses need to understand when building a social media marketing strategy, Ron Jones, in an article for Search Engine Watch, explains.
With this in mind, he claims that simply studying audience demographics may not prove wholly successful and that companies need to get out and involve themselves with the conversations that are actually taking place online.
"Using social media correctly helps companies engage audiences in new ways, be more personable, develop new connections and maintain the ones they have," he adds.
And in a separate post for the site, Erik Qualman says that social media is not a fad but a "fundamental" shift in the way people communicate, which may further highlight the value of social media marketing.
